Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand, and the origin of the Lanna culture. The ancient town of Chiang Rai lies alongside the picturesque Kok River, not far from the mighty Mekong that flows through southeast Asia's heart.

Pakbeng is the halfway point on the Mekong River between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. It remains a popular transport route, and Pakbeng is flourishing.
Luang Prabang, the ancient first capital of Lane Xang kingdom, the center of religious life in Laos and today theWorld Heritage City. Vientiane, capital of Laos is Asia's biggest village. Busy and hectic in comparison to the rest of the country.

Day 1:
Take the early flight to Chiang Rai. From the airport drive into the mountains to Doi Mae Salong, a town founded by Chinese refugees with spectacular views. Lunch at a local restaurant. Drive to Chaing Saen, and ancient town on the Mekong River, to visit the fascinating temples of Chedi Luang and Pa Ngao. Overnight at the Golden Triang.

Day 2:
Early morning drive to Chiang Khong to cross the river to Huai Xai (Laos) for the Luangsay Cruise to Pakbeng. Cruise down the Mekong, stopping to observe rural life and visit a village of Yao minorities. Overnight at Pakbeng in a riverside lodge.

Day 3:
Continue the cruise, with a picnic lunch at a riverside setting and discover the lifestyle of Hmong villagers. Stop at Pak Ou to visit Tam Ting, the caves of 1,000 Buddhas. Overnight at Luang Prabang.

Day 4:
In the morning visit the museum in the old Royal Palace, as well as the beautiful temples of Xieng Thong, Mai, Sene Sukhalam and Visoun. After lunch, discover the weaving village of Baan Phanom. Enjoy sunset over the town from Mount Phou Si. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 5:
Visit the morning market before catching the domestic flight to Vientiane. Learn about this quiet capital with a guided tour of the temples of of Si Sa Ket, Phra Koea and That Luang, the Arc de Triumph and the Russian market. Overnight at Vientiane.

Day 6:
Catch the morning flight back to Bangkok
